Education: Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Sociology) - Ph.D., East Carolina University (Sociology) - M.A., East Carolina University (Psychology) - B.A.; Law enforcement: Mecklenburg County (Charlotte), N.C., and various specialized law enforcement schools/certifications.
Professional Expertise: The causes, patterns and profiles associated with crime; Police and justice system methods/issues; Crime prevention.
Professional Activity: Author of 16 publications on crime and justice. Presented numerous research papers at professional conferences. Member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) – Attended the National Conference meeting in Chicago (2005). Attended the Central Intelligence Agency Outreach Conference to learn the new structure, roles and opportunities with the CIA. Recipient of the prestigious “Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching/Service Award (2003-2004).” “Cope Distinguished Commitment to Criminal Justice Award," “Professor of the Year Award” (when at North Carolina Wesleyan College).
Other Areas of Interest: School and workplace violence (its nature and solutions); delinquency prevention; self defense from assault; rape, robbery and burglary prevention; media commentator on high-profile crimes and their investigation.
Non-Profit/Community Involvement: Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at HPU. Faculty Adviser for Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Honor Society of Criminal Justice Majors. Board of Directors, High Point Christian Academy. High Point Little League certified coach, Upward Basketball youth coach.
Other Interesting Facts: In addition to my academic degrees, I have practical experience in the field of law enforcement. I integrate criminal case examples and practical field exercises into my classroom presentations. Aside from my passion for teaching criminal justice, my personal interests include all racquet sports. I am a former North Carolina State Racquetball Champion with a national amateur ranking of 18th at my peak. I am a USTA tennis player, black belt in karate/defensive tactics instructor, and a certified firearms instructor. I also enjoy weight lifting and white water paddling.

Other Interesting Facts: The most significant experiences that have helped shape my academic and personal interests are those spent working with inmates – either in a teaching capacity or a mental health role. Working with correctional populations changes a person’s perspective on life; you begin to appreciate everything with which you’ve been blessed. Family, friends and education take on new meanings. Aside from my academic interests, I love playing the flute, music from the Romantic period, historical fiction and crossword puzzles. I enjoy water skiing, snow skiing, camping, shooting pool, playing Risk and indoor climbing. Interesting places I have visited include Moscow, Seoul, Helsinki and North Korea.
